EDMONTON, Alb. -- The Wave broke through for a pair in the ninth against the normally invincible Eric Gagne, nipping Alberta 7-5 at the Lair to go up a game in the series.
The game brought bad news on the injury front for Wave GM Junior Burt. Curt Schilling left early with a ding and is likely lost for the remainder of the series.
Trailing 4-1 through the middle portions of the game, Miami bucked up for four in the sixth to go up 5-4. Bret Boone drove in a pair with a bases-loaded single, and I-Rod followed with a two-run double for the Wave.
Rheal Cormier gave up the tying run in the eighth -- barely escaping more serious damage thanks to an inning-ending double play -- sending the ballgame into the ninth at 5-5.
Chipper Jones got things started in the ninth against Gagne by coaxing a walk. After Nomar whiffed, pinch-hitter Eric Byrnes also worked the Dragon closer for a BB, putting two on with one out. Morgan Ensberg followed with his third hit of the game, a single to left- center, chasing hom Jones with the lead run.
Miami added an insurance marker on Steve Finley's sac fly before Chris Hammond put the Dragons away in order in the ninth to seal the deal.

Phelps' stroke ended a magnificent pitchers duel between Kevin Millwood and Hideo Nomo with neither starter figuring in the decision. The win went to Dragon closer Eric Gagne, who bounced back from his Game One loss to pitch a one-two-three ninth and even his series record at 1-1.
Trailing 1-0 after five, the Dragons pulled even in the sixth when Bobby Abreu walked, moved to third on a Scott Rolen single, and scored when Gary Sheffield dropped Ramon Hernandez' fly ball.
Pinch-hitter Angel Berroa got Alberta started in the ninth, rapping a lead-off single off Cormier, who had already worked a perfect eighth. That brought up Phelps, who connected with a Cormier offering and clubbed it deep to left, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
The series now moves to Miami Beach, where Roy Oswalt and Pedro Martinez are slated to hook up.

Fresh off the d.l., Dragon righty Roy Oswalt outdueled Pedro as the Dragons escaped a serious jam in the eighth and walked away with a 2-1 win to go ahead in the series.
Ahead by a run on the strength of Oswalt's pitching and a pair of solo homers, Alberta found itself in hot water in the home half of the eighth with the SandLot crowd exhorting the Wave to tie and take the lead.
Back-to-back singles by Ensberg and Finley sent Oswalt to the showers as Mike MacDougal came in from the pen with the dangerous Gary Sheffield at the plate. MacDougal got Sheffield to rap into a 4-6-3 double play. Alex Cintron then made a spectacular play on a Bret Boone grounder in the hole, and the Dragons escaped unscathed.
Eric Gagne pitched a perfect ninth, and the Dragons had the upper hand heading into Game Four.

Green's blast and the sturdy extra-inning mound work of the Alberta pen spoiled Miami's ninth-inning heroics against a worn-down Eric Gagne. Miami plated two in the inning to keep hope alive, one scoring on Bret Boone's solo bomb off Gagne, the other on Eric Karros' pinch RBI double off Erasmo Ramirez. But it all went for naught as Tony Armas and Sidney Ponson kept the Wave off the board for six innings of OT.
The Dragons finally broke through against Jeremy Affeldt and Woody Williams in the sixth extra frame. Carlos Beltran, who had homered earlier, got things started with a single, chasing Affelt. Williams came on to get Richard Hidalgo on strikes. But he hung a slider to Green, who clubbed it over the center-field wall for a pair.
With a 3-1 series lead, defending champion Alberta is now just a game away from advancing to another ABA Finals.

Miami, which has been nails-tough in elimination games throughout franchise history, was at it again in Game Five, overcoming the injury-induced absence of scheduled starter Curt Schilling to whip Alberta 7-3 at the SandLot.
Although he didn't get the win, the hero was definitely Woody Williams, who didn't make Junior Burt's post-season rotation but was forced into starting duty thanks to Schilling's injury in Game One. Williams came through on the mound and at the plate, rapping out a pair of doubles in addition to throwing six credible innings to keep the Wave in the game.
With the score knotted 3-3 after six, Miami got busy in the seventh. Nomar Garciaparra and Eric Karros got on base with one away and then pulled off a double steal. Morgan Ensberg cashed in with a single to score Nomar with the go-ahead run, and Miami proceeded to add three more when Gary Sheffield went deep to left for three, chasing Dragon starter Mark Mulder.
Paul Quantrill tossed three frames of hitless ball to pick up the win.
The series now returns to Alberta, with Hideo Nomo and Pedro Martinez scheduled to start the sixth and, if neccessary, seventh game for Miami. Nomo will hook up with Alberta's Kevin Millwood in Game Six.

Kevin Millwood worked six-plus innings of solid ball for the win, Mike MacDougal and Eric Gagne closing it out with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless pitching.
Nomo was in hot water from the get-go, walking Luis Castillo and Alex Cintron to start the inning. A Richard Hidalgo sac fly plated the first run. Then with two away, Scott Rolen took Nomo into the left-field seats for three more.
Miami showed life by scoring a pair in the third on Gary Sheffield's two-run double. But Carlos Beltran continued his torrid hitting in the bottom half, clubbing his fourth bomb of the series to make it 5-2. Hidalgo followed with a rocket of his own to pad the lead to four runs. Beltran finished the series with a .429 average and .963 slugging percentage.
Alberta, the surprise Aaron Division champion, will now face division rival R-D in the finals.
